மதுரைக்கு வந்த சுனாமி
திருவிளையாடல் புராணத்தில் மதுரைக்கு வந்த ஆழிப்பேரலை எனப்படும் சுனாமிகள் குறித்து மூன்று பாண்டிய மன்னர்களின் ஆட்சிக் காலங்களில் முக்கியமாகப் பேசப்பட்டுள்ளது:
உக்கிர குமாரன் (படலம் 11):
சுந்தர பாண்டியனின் (சோமசுந்தரேசுவரரின்) மகனான உக்கிர குமாரன் ஆட்சிக் காலத்தில் மதுரைக்கு மிகப்பெரிய ஆழிப்பேரலை (சுனாமி) வந்தது. அப்போது மன்னன் உக்கிர குமாரன் தனது வேலை எறிந்து அந்தச் சுனாமியைத் தடுத்து நிறுத்தினார்.
அபிடேக பாண்டியன் (படலம் 17):
வீரபாண்டியனின் மகனான அபிடேக பாண்டியனது ஆட்சிக்காலத்தில் மீண்டும் ஒரு பேரூழி ஏற்பட்டது. அப்போது கடல் பொங்கி எழுந்து சுனாமியாக மதுரையை அழிக்க வந்தது. இந்த மன்னன் அந்தப் கடல் நீரை வற்றச் செய்து மதுரையைக் காப்பாற்றினார்.
கீர்த்திவீடணன்:
அதுல கீர்த்தியின் மகனான கீர்த்திவீடணன் ஆட்சிக் காலத்தில் ஒரு மிகப்பெரிய பிரளயம் ஏற்பட்டது. அப்போது ஏழு கடல்களும் பொங்கி எழுந்து ஆழிப்பேரலையாக (சுனாமியாக) மாறி உலகையே அழித்தன.
இந்த மாபெரும் பிரளயத்திற்குப் (சுனாமிக்குப்) பின்னரே, சந்திர குலத்தில் வந்த வங்கியசேகர பாண்டியன் என்ற மன்னன் இன்றைய மதுரை நகரைப் பண்டைய பெருமை விளங்கும் வகையில் மீண்டும் உருவாக்கினார்.

The Thiruvilayadal Puranam
prominently recounts the occurrences of massive tidal waves—referred to as Aazhipperalai (tsunamis)—that struck Madurai during the reigns of three specific Pandya kings:
Ugra Kumaran (Chapter 11): During the reign of Ugra Kumaran—the son of Sundara Pandian (Lord Somasundareswarar)—a colossal tidal wave (tsunami) surged toward Madurai. At that critical moment, King Ugra Kumaran hurled his spear, thereby halting and repelling the advancing tsunami.
Abisheka Pandian (Chapter 17): During the reign of Abisheka Pandian—the son of Veerapandian—another catastrophic deluge occurred. The sea rose in fury, manifesting as a tsunami that threatened to obliterate Madurai. This king intervened by causing the floodwaters to recede, thereby saving the city of Madurai.
Keerthiveedanan: During the reign of Keerthiveedanan—the son of Athula Keerthi—a monumental cosmic deluge (Pralayam) took place. On this occasion, the seven seas rose in unison, transforming into a massive tidal wave (tsunami) that engulfed and destroyed the entire world.
It was only after this colossal deluge (tsunami) that a king named Vangiyasekara Pandian—a scion of the Lunar Dynasty (Chandra Kulam)—rebuilt the city of Madurai as it stands today, restoring it to its former glory and ancient grandeur.
