இன்று மதுரை மீனாட்சி அம்மன் கோயிலில் மகா கும்பாபிஷேகம் நடைபெறும் இந்த வரலாற்றுச் சிறப்புமிக்க நாளில், 132 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு — 1894ஆம் ஆண்டு — இதே கோயில் எவ்வாறு காட்சியளித்தது என்பதைப் பார்ப்போம்.
பிரெஞ்சுப் புகைப்படக் கலைஞர் Hector Léveillé எடுத்த இந்த அரிய புகைப்படங்கள், மீனாட்சி அம்மன் கோயிலின் நூற்றாண்டுகளைக் கடந்த கட்டடக்கலை மற்றும் சிற்பக்கலை மரபை நம் கண்முன் கொண்டு வருகின்றன.
கோபுரங்கள், பொற்றாமரைக் குளத்தைச் சுற்றிய மண்டபங்கள், சிற்பங்கள் நிறைந்த தூண்கள், நீண்ட பிரகாரங்கள், நுணுக்கமான சுதைச் சிற்பங்கள் மற்றும் இன்று பல மாற்றங்களைக் கண்டுள்ள கோயிலின் உட்பகுதிகள் எனப் பல அம்சங்கள் இதில் பதிவாகியுள்ளன. குறிப்பாக அக்காலத்தில் கோபுரங்களும் சிற்பங்களும் எவ்வாறு தோற்றமளித்தன என்பதை அறிய இவை முக்கியமான காட்சி ஆவணங்கள்.
On the historic occasion of the Maha Kumbabishekam of Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple today, here is a remarkable journey back to 1894.
These rare photographs taken by Hector Léveillé preserve the temple as it appeared 132 years ago. From its monumental gopurams and pillared corridors to sculptural details, painted surfaces and architectural spaces, the collection offers an invaluable visual record of one of Madurai's most important historic monuments.
More than photographs of a temple, these are windows into Madurai in the late 19th century—allowing us to compare what has changed, what has been restored, and what has endured for generations.
